Kozlu Aziziye Mosque Zonguldak Tile Restoration

For the restoration of Aziziye Mosque in the Kozlu district of Zonguldak, completed in 2025, İznik Mavi Çini produced 190 turquoise Iznik tiles. These tiles replaced some of the mosque’s old Kütahya tiles.

The foundation of Kozlu Aziziye Mosque was laid on 27 August 1871 with the support of the Ereğli Maden-i Hümayun, the Ottoman administration that ran coal mining in the basin. Originally named Kozlu Mosque, the building took the name Aziziye Mosque after its renovation in 1950.

In the restoration of Kozlu Aziziye Mosque, İznik Mavi Çini produced 190 turquoise tiles of 15 × 15 cm for the renewed tiling on the lower interior walls and in the window recesses. The tiles were made using an old tile removed from the mosque as a model.

“We determined the turquoise tone of the new tiles using the old tile removed from the mosque as a model.”

— İznik Mavi Çini, Senior Restoration Workshop Manager

Who produced the turquoise tiles in Kozlu Aziziye Mosque?
The turquoise tiles used in the mosque’s 2025 restoration are Iznik tiles produced by İznik Mavi Çini in 2025.

Are the tiles in Kozlu Aziziye Mosque Iznik tiles or Kütahya tiles?
Both. Kütahya tiles were used in the mosque during the 1950 renovation and later repairs; in the 2025 restoration, some of them were replaced with Iznik tiles produced by İznik Mavi Çini.

Where are the tiles located in Kozlu Aziziye Mosque?
The turquoise tiles are inside the mosque, on the lower walls and in the window recesses. The yellow-ground floral borders on the upper part of the walls are not tiles but kalem işi, traditional painted decoration applied directly to the plaster.
